SLIP
Serial Line Interface Protocol(slip)
Point to Point Protocol (ppp)
SLIP and PPP allow you to connect to the Internet and use client software
to access services on the Internet. For example, a web browser, or
mail/news reader can be used through SLIP/PPP services. Netscape Pegasus
or Eudora mail, all require either a slip or ppp connection. Telnet can
take place using terminal emulation software.
DNS
The Domain Name System is a dictributed database. Thiss allows local
control of segments of the database, yet data in each segment are
acailabel across the entire network. The structure of DNS is heiarchical,
reading a domain name from right to left you start at a top level domain
and work your way to the local node or host name of the machine you want
to attach to. For example u.cc.utah.edu, starting at the right we see
that this machine is part of the top level edu domain. Moving toward the
left we f ind that it is part of the Utah domain. Then the cc domain(
short for Computer Center), finally the left most part is the node or host
name of the machine that you want to attach to. in this case the name is
just the letter "u".
Things to know:
Top Level Domains: Gov,Edu,Org,Com,two letter country code i.e. us
Top level domains describe either a geographical location like
"us" for United States, or an oganizational grouping like Gov for
government, Org for non-profit organizations, Com for commercial ventures,
Edu for 4 year higher educational facilties like t he University of Utah.
You will notice that outside of the United States, Gov,Edu,Org, and Com
are used less frequently than geographical notation.
